Unlike most bones, a patella is a sesamoid bone, meaning it develops within a tendon rather than connecting two other bones directly. In cattle, that's the tendon running over the knee joint, which makes the patella exceptionally dense and durable, ideal for the extended gnawing that makes recreational bones so satisfying and helps scrape plaque off teeth. Because it's attached to so much surrounding tendon and cartilage, it's also a popular choice for making homemade bone broth, adding natural collagen and gelatin to the pot as it simmers.
Raw Feeding Fact
Beef patellas fall into the recreational category of raw bones rather than the edible category, and that distinction matters. Recreational bones like this one are dense enough to hold up to extended chewing without being meant to be fully consumed, unlike softer raw meaty bones such as chicken necks or rabbit tails that are digestible and intended to be eaten. That's why supervision matters here: once a recreational bone wears down to a small enough piece to be swallowed whole, it should be taken away rather than left for your dog to finish off.
